We often head in to vacations with good intentions, but can sometimes find ourselves spiraling down the rabbit hole when it comes to our routine health habits.
Traveling does grant us the opportunity to explore new cultures, food and cocktails, however it is not an invitation to forego our overall wellness. Yes, indulge, but remain mindful of your health, the habits you want to maintain, and how GREAT you feel when you treat yourself WELL.
Check out my 6 tips to staying healthy while on the go!
1. Opt to stay in an Airbnb or with family
Choosing to stay in an Airbnb or with family will not only save you money while traveling, but it will also give you access to a kitchen! This means you can hit the supermarket and plan in home meals, assuring you get adequate nutrition, making those occasional indulgences worthwhile!
2. Plan ahead
Spend some time researching and finding the best plant based restaurants, supermarkets, and fitness clubs in the area! Going in with a game plan will create excitement and assure adherence to your wellness habits.
3.Stock up on easy travel food
Airports don't always provide the best selection in food. Neither do long road trips with one fast food chain after another, so packing your own food eliminates the chances of making poor food choices!
Here are a few of my go-to's:
Hummus and veggie cups
Coconut yogurt and fruit cup
Vegan protein powder
Oatmeal cup with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit (you can get hot water at a gas station or coffee shop)
Mixed nuts and seeds
Buddha bowl with rice, grilled veggies, tofu, nuts and seeds
*Dont forget a separate container with any condiment sachets, utinsils, and napkins, just in case!
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
The humidity in an airplane is 20% less than what your body is used to, which means you will use MORE water to carry out essential functions. Dehydration means your cells wont function properly, which can result in fatigue or the infamous cold many seem to develop after travel.
Bring a water bottle that is easily refillable and try to drink as much water as possible. It is also beneficial to book an aisle seat for obvious reasons!
You will also want to avoid sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol, as those also contribute to dehydration.
5. Make time to move
We get out of our normal routine when we are away from home, but it's still important we make time to move. Find a gym nearby, rent a bike, or opt to walk the city. Movement will keep you fresh, clear, and feeling great!
Traveling can take its toll on our bodies, which means prioritizing sleep is a must! Listen to your body and rest when needed. If you have trouble sleeping in new locations like myself, travel with a sleep mask and your favorite calming essential oils.
